Chongqing University traces its origin to 1929, when it was established as a regional engineering college on the cliffs above the Yangtze. Through the wartime years, when the Nationalist government relocated to Chongqing, the University became a critical center of scientific and technical research. It has retained that charge ever since — an institution built around the belief that scholarship must answer to the country that funds it.
Today the University is one of China's "Project 985" founding members and a Double First-Class institution, with four campuses across the municipality, eleven colleges, and over fifty thousand students.
